The History of

Bodweni Hall Estate

Bodweni Hall is an impressive, stone-built country house steeped in historic significance. While tradition holds that the original dwelling was established in 1561, the existing Hall primarily dates from the 19th century.
Historical records show that in November 1561, Dafydd ap Thomas Griffith of Llandderfel was engaged to marry Gwen, daughter of Thomas ap Robert of Bodweni. Over the centuries, the estate was home to prominent regional figures, including Morgan Lloyd of Gwynedd and the Puritan preacher Vavasor Powell.

Later owned by Ellis David (known as ‘Ellis David the Puritan’ due to his allegiance to Nonconformism), Bodweni became one of the very first homes in Merionethshire licensed to hold public preaching meetings.

Having remained the centerpiece of the estate for centuries, the Hall was partially rebuilt around the turn of the 20th century before transitioning into a private residence featuring classic front drives and formal gardens.
